Digital Storytelling and Multimedia Design to Relive the Past

The Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta in Greece has promoted the creation of a permanent exhibition within the Grand Master’s Palace in Rhodes, a prestigious site within the city’s museum network. The exhibition, dedicated to the history of the Knights of Rhodes (later known as the Knights of Malta), is designed to immerse visitors in the Order’s past through an innovative and engaging experience.

Zeranta had the honor of designing the exhibition’s layout, storytelling, setup, and the production of multimedia content for the four rooms that make up the museum route, contributing to making the visit a truly unique experience.

Technology and Narrative

Each room represents a different historical era, offering a fluid narrative that explores how the Knights adapted to political and social changes over time, highlighting their key role in shaping European identity.

The exhibition route has been developed primarily with an immersive digital storytelling approach, allowing visitors to relive a thousand years of history through firsthand accounts of the protagonists who shaped the Order’s legacy.

  • Life-size (1:1) video installations: Historical figures come to life, move, and narrate their experiences to visitors. This realistic presence effect creates a direct connection between the audience and the key figures of the Order.
  • A physical timeline spanning approximately 7 linear meters: Runs through the first room, marking the major milestones in the Order’s development through historical artifacts and reconstructions.
  • Projections with animated drawings: Used to illustrate significant moments in the Order’s history, combining aesthetics with storytelling.
  • Scenographic lighting of the rooms: Designed to emphasize architectural elements and create evocative atmospheres.
  • Multilingual audioguides, videos, and graphics: Available in English and Greek, ensuring an inclusive and accessible experience for an international audience.

An International Excellence Project

The exhibition and architectural project was carried out in collaboration with a-fact/architecture factory, combining an innovative museum approach with deep respect for the historical and artistic context of the Grand Master’s Palace. Zeranta’s contribution has transformed the museum into a vibrant and dynamic space, where technology and historical narration blend to offer visitors an innovative immersive experience.

A Museum Looking to the Future

The new setup of the Museum of the Knights of Malta in Rhodes represents a significant step forward in enhancing historical heritage through digital tools. By integrating storytelling and technology, the museum is not just a place of memory preservation but an interactive space capable of engaging and inspiring visitors of all ages.

Zeranta is proud to have contributed to this extraordinary project, bringing its expertise in storytelling, experiential design, and multimedia production to breathe new life into the history of the Knights of Rhodes and Malta.
